This exhibition marks the artist's first solo show in the United States since his group 1920 Whitney Studio Club group exhibition. Torres-García personally selected the works to be displayed, sending them to New York from his Montevideo studio. According to Sidney Janis, Barnett Newman visited the show and enthusiastically explained the paintings to fellow artists.
